February 14, 2010

During the summer and fall of 2009, the local Boy Scouts relocated several nuisance rabbits that were trapped in the community.  The traps used were constructed in last quarter of 2008 by the Scouts during their weekly meetings in the basement of SJFG.  The materials were donated by club members and the rabbit stocking committee.  It is a known fact that good quality, well distributed escape cover is fundamental to good rabbit populations.  Initial rabbit habitat improvements were initiated by the rabbit stocking committee in 2009 by planting approximately 10,000 ft 2 of switch grass and building several bunny bungalows.  In 2010, the rabbit stocking committee plans to continue improving our rabbit habitat.  Additional improvements we can aim for are: to cut and pile brush, bulldozed heavy brush and trees into piles near our field borders, introduce food plots around the proposed gas wells and build additional bunny bungalows.  Volunteers are needed to make this happen.

Three successful fun beagle hunts (August, September and December) were sponsored by the SJFG in 2009.  Special thanks are owed to Larry Russman and Raymond Tissue from the Uniontown beagle club.  In 2010, it is planned to hold several fun and youth beagle hunts at SJFG.  Confirmed dates of the beagle hunts have not been set at this time.
